Our sustainable legacy

We create cleaner, greener environment solutions that protect our planet, whilst focussing on our people to sustain our business, our industry and the communities within which we deliver.

We recognise our responsibility to manage our activities in a sustainable way. By aligning our sustainable legacy strategy to the UN’s sustainability goals, we are focussed on delivering outcomes that benefit both the environment and communities.

We aim to lead by example, so we have ambitious targets for net zero carbon emissions, as well as key goals for biodiversity net gain, efficient resource use and social value outcomes. These will only be achieved by recognising the importance of people and embracing an inclusive culture. Continuing to build awareness through our STOPThink! behaviour programme is critical to us creating a sustainable legacy that we can be truly proud of.

We’re creating a sustainable legacy by:

Being carbon neutral now, targeting net zero by 2030
Delivering biodiversity benefit
Being resource efficient
Giving back to society
Being inclusive and a great place to work

Being carbon neutral

Targeting net zero by 2030, Octavius is being carbon neutral now, initially for Scope 1 and 2 emissions through a programme of carbon offsetting and tree planting. We’ve been purchasing carbon offsets as compensation for our emissions since January 2022.We will reduce all future emissions related to our business by working with our customers and supply chain to do so. This will include a move towards the use of alternative fuels such as Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (HVO) and using renewable energy sources to power our offices, plant and fleet.

Delivering biodiversity benefit

We are committed to helping promote and deliver biodiversity benefits in support of Net Gain. We have set a target to plant 4000 trees this year in the UK and globally to promote afforestation and woodland development. All our projects will include biodiversity measurement and identify biodiversity enhancements that enable customers to make informed decisions on net gain.

Being resource efficient

Applying circular economy principles are going to be critical if we are to go beyond recycling.  We already achieve a 97% waste from landfill diversion rate but we want to go further and apply resource efficiency thinking at all stages of our project lifecycle.  We are committed to responsible sourcing of materials, using alternative materials and working with our supply chain and customers to minimise the use of materials and components by rethinking current practices.

Giving back to society

Social value comes in many forms and means different things to different people. The infrastructure we deliver itself delivers social value, but we know we must go further than just delivering to contract.
For us that means supporting local businesses through local spend & collaboration; local employment; skills, education & training; diverse & inclusive workplaces; enhanced communities & environments; volunteering and charitable contributions.

We record and measure our social value using the Thrive social value platform; we’ve set ourselves the target of delivering social value equivalent to 20% of our turnover in 2022/3 (up from 11% in 2021/2).

Being inclusive and a great place to work

We willingly and enthusiastically embrace and celebrate our differences – in experiences, backgrounds, ways of thinking and working. Being inclusive is not only the right thing to do; it also means that our colleagues are more engaged, motivated and productive.
Our STOP think programme is about engaging people to think differently, challenge the status quo and make better decisions.  It is about sharing, learning and self-awareness and ensuring we embrace change and do the right thing.
We’re currently in the process of signing up to the Global Equality Collective to support us to promote inclusivity and diversity in our business; we’re finalising our flexible working policy and enabling colleagues to give some of their time as a volunteer.
