Why Responsibility Doesn’t End with Project Delivery

Rail infrastructure is a vital national asset. Whether it’s a stretch of track, a station or even a platform, any time it can’t be used is not only an inconvenience, it can also have an economic and customer service impact.

Investment in the rail network doesn’t come from a bottomless well. Every project needs to be delivered efficiently and with a view to whole life costs and long-term asset availability. The responsibility of the contractor is broader and longer term than the scope of each individual project. In particular, Octavius always seeks to ensure the following:

  • The way projects are designed and delivered takes full consideration of, and seeks to simplify, any future maintenance.
  • There is always comprehensive project documentation in an accessible format agreed by the customer.
  • We actively contribute to building a comprehensive knowledge base concerning the asset and its condition.
  • There is a rigorous approach to quality assurance.

It’s always important to bear in mind that assets are interconnected. Work on one part of the infrastructure can affect other assets. Future maintenance may be somebody else’s responsibility. All of which makes collaboration and standardisation of the approach essential. BS11000 provides a common standard for collaborative working and will hopefully become universally adopted throughout the rail industry.

While we do everything possible to eliminate them, in the real world there is always the possibility of a defect or fault occurring after delivery. Responding rapidly requires an investment in skills, experience and accreditation of our staff so that they can be mobilised rapidly to safely access the network and complete repairs and remedial works quickly. Most importantly, it requires access to reliable and detailed information on the asset.

Ultimately, we remember that commitments go beyond project delivery. Our priorities are to support our customer and the entire asset community to deliver long-term value and reliability.
